NPPL DC registrations

I realize there is some tension (and uncertainty) surrounding this whole NPPL/PSP business and today's post isn't about the merger or the format or who thinks which league is better. Y'all can argue that stuff forever. This is about the numbers--and nothing else. I know, I've done stuff on the numbers recently but it's like nobody is paying any attention given the amount of made up or just plain misinformation being bandied about.
Today (August 28) the official registration of 7-man divisional teams competing in DC is 34. That's for D1, D2 & D3. Sure they still have a week or ten days or so but the numbers haven't changed significantly in a couple of weeks and the total is ballpark for the last two DC NPPL events. Does that mean the NPPL is bad? Or second rate? Or whatever negative you want to apply? No, but it does mean that in nearly 3 seasons of NPPL 3.0 no real progress has been made in expanding the 7-man base. Or demonstrating that 7-man has any real popular, widespread support. Because it doesn't. Simple as that.

No one wants to play 7 man. What does this have to do with the Kaos theory?

Anon#3 says:

But they steadfastly market and promote the sport, and you say things have not improved? Is not marketing and promotion of this sport in it's current, albeit stagnant state, still a display of good intentions? Can you not give them their full credit for at least trying to help despite their lack of success? In no other place on gods green earth do good intentions get so much utter disdain. I mean, what is this washington DC?

Anon#3, I think that's just it. If all the good intentions, efforts and marketing isn't working, what's the point? If you try and try and participation stays stagnant or goes down, maybe there is a fundamental flaw in the product? I'm just looking at this from a business point of view. I have no horse in this race.

Good intentions are admirable only concerning morality. If they don't have good participation despite good intentions that means there's something seriously wrong.

In 2009 they had 58 teams 2010 I believe 48 ish..this year is awful.
I believe its not to do with marketing or location it is the timing of this event, August and September are the wrong months to throw a big event, I feel sure if this event was at the end of october it could be a great success.
We have said this to the powers for many years but no one listens!!
Historicaly this 4th event or 3rd in this case has always been a bit of a dud.

I'm willing to entertain the possibility but you'll need to try and make the case. Start by trying English. Maybe get a fifth grader to help you with the bigger words.

Absolutely nothing. I post what I like when I feel like it. Kaos Theory is still coming.

Do they? Do they really? It seems to me if their marketing genius can't get more players it's a helluva leap from that to getting big time sponsors. If you hired a marketing firm to help grow your business and instead your business shrank would you continue to pay them for their "good intentions?"

Mr Q
Does your theory apply to the PSP as well? If so would NJ have had more than 120+ teams if it was held in October too?

August before school starts is better than September. But September is not better that October when you're in Virginia, and not when you have another event in Vegas in late October/November.

I suppose if NPPL moved DC Open back to August, or somehow ran it back-to-back with Vegas, they'd get more of the 7-man teams playing in other leagues....

...oh wait.

I don't understand how people can tout the marketing brilliance of the NPPL over the PSP.
NPPL advocates say they have better marketing because they have had more out of industry sponsor interest or do more to grow the sport. Can't the PSP say they have better marketing because more fields and tournament series use their bunker sets, field dimensions, layouts, and player ranking system etc. If the purpose of marketing is to drive potential customers to your business then the PSP has won the marketing debate outright.

The idea of a major paintball tournament series growing the sport as a business decision seems a little far fetched to me. They provide a competition for existing paintball players. Moving their tournaments around to attract new teams to their league by proximity to regional markets, a healthy relationship with fields and stores in that region, and quality events seems like enough to me.

On the other hand, it is down right necessary for fields and stores to market in order to introduce new people to paintball (grow the sport)just to keep their businesses healthy. If in doing that they groom potential tournament players for PSP formats, then the P
SP has done its job.

I think if PSP NJ simply was announced and confirmed earlier in the year that it would have brought in more teams. I don't really know for sure, but if I had to take a guess, I'd say they could have brought another ten teams in at least. I'm just basing this off of the huge abundance of regional leagues that are located in the North East area.

And September is definitely not the greatest time to put on an event... school is in full swing by then.

Dates? Are you people seriously talking about dates?

How about, majority of competitive players consider 7man outdated and boring format, hence the decline.

Jesus is weeping due amount of excuses and lack of facing the facts.

It's all about context, right? Are we talking about having a successful business model? Or are we talking about something vague like "#1 National League Status" or "Mainstream" or "Better than the PSP"?

Is 34 teams enough to operate a tournament in the black? Sure. If the NPPL can keep their overhead costs in line with team participation.

So I guess one's opinion about the current level of team participation says more about what is important to that person, rather than anything having to do with the NPPL.

I never meant to imply that a value judgement couldn't be made about the team numbers of the NPPL events, nor that the NPPL owners themselves might not be delusional about what they think they have vis a vis what they actually have.

Simply that ones expectations are laid bare by what one thinks these numbers mean. Doesn't make 'em wrong...
